How I Train

Many terms can describe my training philosophy. Clicker training, positive reinforcement, and force-free are a just a few. In a nutshell, I reinforce the dog for doing something I like with something he wants, often it’s food. It’s the same idea behind you getting a paycheck from your employer. In other words, you prefer to work for pay and so does your dog.

Reinforcement drives behavior & you might as well drive it where you’d like to go!

Science supports the effectiveness of reward-based methods, making harsh tools like chokes, prongs, or e-collars (bark, shock, fence, etc) unnecessary, outdated, and potentially hazardous. Studies have shown that aggressive behavior can increase when using these tools. Rest assured, I exclusively utilize marker (aka clicker) training and abundant food rewards.

Training should foster joy, not fear or pain, for both you and your dog, yielding enduring results. Following the recommendations of the American Veterinary Society for Animal Behavior (AVSAB), I prioritize rewards-based training and behavior modification. It’s effective and creates enduring results.

A joy to work with. Great dog trainer who can help you with anything. Love a trainer who is very passionate and knowledgeable with the subject. Highly recommend working with Serenity Dog Training.

My Dogs

I currently live with three dogs. Darwin the Schipperke, Copper the All American Shelter Dog Special, and Sage the Pembroke Welsh Corgi.

Darwin is a joyful young boy who competes in conformation. He has earned his Instinct title in barn hunt, a Novice trick dog title, and a level 1 Cooperative Care Certificate. He is just beginning to put his love of sniffing to use by learning scent work. He’s also continuously working on building strong foundations for life skills, learning more cooperative care, and more tricks.

Copper, on the other hand, has brought me on the journey of rehabilitating a reactive dog. Along the way, she has earned both her Expert-level trick dog title and her level 3 Cooperative Care Certificate. She currently enjoys practicing scentwork in addition to her many other skills and tricks. She’s taught me more than a lifetime of dogs combined, especially in regards to handling for basic care. She is my inspiration for finally making the leap to professional dog training.

Sage is the newest addition to our home. She’s still learning the ropes of living with us. To date, her big accomplishments are mastering the stairs, using the dog door, and sitting! She’s such a sweet dog and loves everyone.
